There appears to be some debate about my intentions for next season going on. Last Saturday’s ET put in my in a short list alongside some less likely candidates for the Peterborough United job. I need to count myself out of the running for that post as it would probably interfere with my international commitments to the Gambia under 17’s national side, who I agreed to sponsor during my recent holiday there (sorry Seb did not spot any Oundle Town tracksuits adorning any of the players)
When I took over at Ortonians, I made a commitment to do the job for 3 seasons, and always intended to honour that despite approaches from clubs in higher leagues. That leaves me free this summer to choose whatever route I feel to be appropriate for my future, but would again re-iterate that at the moment the summer seems a million miles away, and indeed I have not had any conversations with current Ortonians players regarding next season.
Recently in an attempt to draw out my intentions, I was almost a victim of an intended sting, by an up and coming journalist recently recruited by the Wisbech Herald.
I received a phone call from a “Farmer Sheikh Martin claiming to represent the interests of Wisbech St Giles Rovers, who had aspirations of going through the Isle League and onward into the Ridgeons League and beyond.
I met him in his luxury caravan just outside Emneth, having travelled first class on a paid for ticket in the upper deck of the number 65 bus from Peterborough. He tried all kinds of tactics to entice me. He offered me the hand of his daughter, but I thought that she might want to keep it for herself. Pound notes and as many vegetables as I could eat, he said was not a problem and that he was prepared to do anything to “stick it up those March St Johns upstarts.
My suspicions were aroused when I asked for an inspection of the facilities at the ground and was told that the bulls grazing there would not like that. When I ultimately declined the job, he came clean and threatened to have pictures of me in a compromising position with Spec & Gino (buying them a drink) made public.
Hope this clears things up for everyone
