The banter starts here. Tiger Tom and his 12 men true and fair are ready to take on the Galacticos.

Yep, the Cup Final morning "Ryder Cup" golf challenge is on at Orton Meadows on May 13th. First match is on at 7.40am (sorry couldnt get it any later) with format being 6 games of 4 ball better ball.

Spec its £18.50 a man, so might as well round it up to £20. Was thinking of buying a little trophy for the winner, but dont want to confuse your lads with unusual objects, so could have £36 for the last goalscorer in the cup final (24 x £1.50? - each player picks a number out each)

Looking forward to seeing the scramble for places over the next few weeks at Ortonans, with potential players looking to secure points in my order of merit.

My boys are confident, particularly sicknote - look forward to receiving your team list 1-12 with the best players from each team playing each other. Only certainty is that me and "Robbo 7-iron Robinson" will line up against you and someone else with a mid 20's handicap.

How can you have competition for places, you struggle to get 12 players out on a Saturday
Well up for it mate and if circumstances allow I'll even have a caddy with me, not for carrying my clubs but to carry the Premier league championship around with him, might even allow you a few sips of what's inside so you can touch it for the last time !!!

Trust it will be non alcoholic Mr Speechley at that time in the morning.

Tee Times confirmed as 7.40 to 8.20 which means we can have a bite to eat etc. ahead of the cup final.

We are also going to have a longest drive and nearest the pin, so that might be a better use of the extra money, which now includes £18.50 for 1 free round as there are 24 of us, though there is a £10 booking fee.

As we don't have a game on Saturday May 6th, will be arranging a friendly with Milton Golf Course so that we are ready for the challenge. 7-Iron has been at a secret location this week working on his short game, so I think you might be up against it Spec.

All looking good on the golf tommy, managed to get 15 holes in at thorpe wood, was looking good for 18 holes but felt a twinge as i was putting for an eagle on the 15th so experience told me to chill in the clubhouse.
The word is hanks that you have the daunting task of trying to carry spec's ciggy supply on the golf day, now that makes you more important than tommy c on a saturday mate so chin up.

Unfortunatley I've had to out source that job to eddie stobarts because despite coming 23rd in the trial we had at swingers (which was a let down i might add, i'd assumed something else!) some people are unavailable due to wife commitments. so once again i'm the 12th man.. And putting for an eagle glen? I thought you were supposed to use a driver of the tee mate?!

well done to ortonians on this victory, just a couple of things on this cracking game.

1. strange how the league gave this game to a rookie ref, some mad calls by him. but hey nice to see a new face who could become a decent ref given time.

2. baines top player, well done to him as he caused mayhem in the 1st 5 mins of game helping to get his side 2 nil up in that time before psl put leon 'billy' reverly on him. after that psl staged a real fight back.

3. nice to see that psl never gave up and clawed their way back into the game a few times and even for the better part of the game were a real treat to watch. and almost pulled it back to 3-3. rankin up front was in great form as were most of the other psl players, makes u wonder how they have had such a poor season. a couple of psl players had a poor game, keeper ponsford the hero on sunday for westwood, and sorry to say poor tonight for psl.

but hey what added excitment it goes to the last day of the season for ortonians this sat and good luck to them.

on current form only one real winner in this game, sorry spec think it could be a nearly season for u mucker.

Will the luck hold out for them Carefree ! Didn't really expect to see it won or lost last night although very impressed with psl battling like they did, wouldn't have wanted Ortonians to be playing anywhere else except Moulton away on the last game having to go there and win it. Very difficult place to go and get a result so all's not lost yet.
What a way to finish a season !!

Very satisfied with what was eventually a good win against a very committed "Best China" PSL side. Indeed I have been really touched by how much respect all of our recent opponents have shown us and the league with their desire to mark their final game with Ortonians with a positive result.

Have to make some comments about the referee, who told me at the end that this was his first game at this level - if so, he did very well in terms of his fitness, positioning, overall control and general demeanour. I am not sure how relevant it was Mark to place in your otherwise excellent report on the game on the PDFL site mention of the over ruling of Mr Cox for the final goal, which turned out to be the last kick of the game. He was 10 yards away to Paul's 50 - I agree with Al Lenihan who conducted himself well at the final whistle - giving Adam a little bit of advice on how that situation could be handled differently in the future. We need to encourage and help young refs as they come through not destroy them. As for the appointment this was after all 13th v 2nd and was only made into a big game by the league situation and the side and approach that PSL came out with.

On to Moulton then and have to overcome the only side we have lost away to in 3 seasons. Understand that something happened in a reserve match which has upset them, though I not sure of the relevance for this game, and in any case I am expecting nothing more than a 100% committed Moulton side as is always the case.

That's 72 points for the season and beats last seasons tally. Very proud of how the players have overcome the hammer blows of being denied the chance to win a 3rd consecutive PFA Senior Cup through no fault of their own in October followed by an even more devastating announcement of the clubs folding in February.

Whatever happens Saturday and then Monday in the Hunts Senior Cup Final this has been another fantastic season, and last nights game demonstrated in micro what we are all about - go out with the right attitude - roll our sleeves up when up against it - sometimes a bit nervous in our play - have pockets of quality to see us through those difficult circumstances.

We'll be up for the game against you saturday tommy, as is the case for every game, & also only fair to hotpoint. We very nearly did you a favour the other weekend against them so we'll carry on playing in our usual 'manner' which you love so much.

As you said in an earlier post only wish certain teams showed the same 'application' to end of season games last year, but there we go.

When all said & done you and hotpoint must be congratulated on your performances over the season & level of consistency.

I personally thought that Ortonians were gifted 3 of their 4 goals last night Bainseys being an outstanding goal.PSL wernt (switched on) at the start of the game and allowed Ortonians 2 goals.PSL came back into the game and looked the better side with a few good saves from Beeney.Pity bout the "goal" at the end of the game as the score in my opinion did not reflect the game. But fair play to Tommys lads for the win and Saturday should be very interesting.Just hope Ian Lambert has ear muffs for Tommy Treacher lol only joking Tommy but i hope you like my little joke bout the booking last Saturday.

Think our first 2 goals were both decent finishes and as a result of our good play as well as PSL not being switched on at the start - our only messy goal was the 3rd.

Unfortunately scoring twice in the first 4 minutes is bound to have an impact on your state of mind, and once we allowed PSL back into the game, we found it difficult to get our rhythm back. Would like to have had the comfort of the penalty to have made life a little easier, and at 3-2 we were certainly hanging on and not particularly convincingly. Rankin & Horner were causing us massive problems and the introduction of Abbbas gave PSL a lift with his quality in midfield (though his dive in the box was a bit comical!)

Last goal was unfortunate for a couple of reasons, not least of which was that it gave the score a lopsided look. Happy to take some justifiable criticism for our performance in part - getting used to it after winning by the same scoreline at Oundle at the start of the season and even getting some stick for not being that good after winning a game 8-1 away from home at Pinchbeck last year!

Tommy thanks for you compliments regarding the report. Just felt that the game got harder for Adam the longer it went on. Good effort though. Could have made it easier for himself with the last minute goal by simply talking to the assistant. The point I think Al mentioned to him at the end. the odd caution may have helped as well. Back to the title race. Too close to call, as it has been all season. Still think you will snatch it on Saturday. Signing of Morrow could have swung it your way. It has kept the happy Hammer on his toes as well as Mr Laid back Ayres. Best of luck to both sides. It is a pity that it is not be decided with you both playing.

26-04-2006, 17:49
That is exactly what Al was suggesting Mark and he did it in a spot on manner without histrionics. For me the lad was not overawed or phased by the game and could turn out to be half decent. Getting big decisions right and knowing when to show and just as importantly not show cards comes with experience. There were a lot of 50/50 tackles all over the pitch which 1 side or the other always wants a free kick from but I did not see too many tackles that warranted a caution.

Also agree with you on the league title - 50/50 for me as well and we will have to lay this Moulton hoodoo to rest to do it - only side to beat us in 44 away games over 3 years and we have also not beaten them at home in that time. However we have beaten them in other competitons 3 times so we will have to approach as a cup game I suppose - could you please arrange for "our" PFA trophy to be available for the day!

There is no relevance for this game. This is 2 Prem teams. 1 trying to win the Prem and the other trying to stop them. The only thing from the past that is a factor is the results between the 2 teams.

Tommy trying to bury his hoodoo at Broad Lane and Moulton preventing that from happening.

Back to the purpose of this topic, which was the Golf Match on Saturday May 13th!

I now appear to have selection problems with so many people eager to play, though I suspect a number might drop off on the day with the early start (7.40).

Can't believe 4 of our lads have arranged a game on Sunday to get some practice in, particularly as 1 of them never used to make football practice! (i.e. training).

Bainsey has a night out for his brothers birthday the night before and will be in the last group - be interesting to see if he manages 18 holes?

Looking forward to the Cooper/Robinson v Speechley/Rudd game which might attract the biggest gallery (if we can get Billy to caddy) - and I am especially looking forward to seeing Mr Rudd again - he will know why!

Tom ,who are the 4 players sneaking a sunday game in

Tommy Trophy
11-05-2006, 12:44
So the waiting is nearly over - my 12 have been selected. Little bit worried by how bullish Ruddy was last Sunday about the chances of him and Spec beating me and Robbo in the opening game, even wanting some money on it.

Still I will be slightly handicaped by having to carry all of our trophies around in my bag (well I can't leave them in the car can I? - maybe you can lend me that trolley you were going to use Spec?)

I was also wondering if you wanted to help present the league medals to our lads that either play or show up in the Granary at 1 o'clock afterwards Spec (you just need to sign here to agree that you have received your medal - nudge nudge - wink, wink) - that would be a nice touch and I understand that Mark will be down taking some pictures for the site.

It would be an honour and a privelage Tommy, nice gesture and much appreciated, the way I played yesterday you and Robbo can have as much loot on as you wish, I think you are odds on to start with though.

More mind games!

I even went on a driving range earlier in the week (not that I am taking the game seriously!) and whilst I no longer appear to be driving the ball 20 yards and leaving a divot in front of the tee, the ball was not going particularly straight - this is ok at Thorpe Wood but not so good at Orton.

Birdy is popping down the Granary on Saturday and might be there at 7.30 but is of to France or something later on so will probably miss the presentation element of the day. Chris Wingrove & Dave Hart are 1 of my pairs, thereby representing the glorious past of the club, though Dave did play in our own day last year and is bleeding rubbish!

My order for the 4 ball matchplay format is therefore: -
Cooper / G Robinson
Fogg / Twigden
N Robinson / Moorhouse
Kaye / Paling
Wingrove / Hart
Baines / Ayres (would be 3 but Baines getting there late)

And the Galactico line up? (tip - keep Ashley Woods & Brads Mickleson apart!)

Excellent Day.. thought the 5 1 score line was a bit harsh on the ortonians boys but ah well, we had to win something this year!! luckily we had youth on our side with our pairing and knew our opponents wouls suffer late on in the searing heat. I think the good result for our first pair out set the tone for the rest. Great fun

Tommy Trophy
15-05-2006, 17:41
Yep well done to the Galacticos - all the games were close with 2 being decided on the last and me and Robbo falling bravely on the 17th - I think getting a par on the 15th and losing the hole to Ruddy's birdie from off the green when it was all square did us in.

Not even going to mention the questionable selection criteria for a couple of the Hotpoint picks. I'm not sure Paul Cox once buying a Hotpoint washing machine and Steve being the managers brother-in-law strictly count but hey!

Didn't make it to Fletton ex-servicemans as the Ortonians boys had a nostalgic afternoon drinking Coke (I kid you not!) whilst watching the cup final in the Granary and recalling the events of the season.

It's a shame that the manager didn't follow suit ending up asleep in his seaweed starter and looking a bit of a mess when Mrs.C arrived home at 12.30 - all done now though and I think I might give you guys a bit of a rest from my ramblings for a while now - over and out!

I'd just like to echo Hank's comments on what an enjoyable day it was. Unfortunatley, the quality of the golf didn't match the level of sportsmanship (apart from our fourball, of course).

Particularly humbled by Spec agreeing to present the medals, and his teeth were hardly gritted at all. Also nice to have someone else there who is old enough to remember my playing days! Thanks very much for both things, Spec.

Also thanks to Mark for braving the conditions with a stinking cold, and managing to capture my 30ft putt drop on the 14th (or was it 50ft, Gary?).

Think you were out of order though Tommy, regarding Dave Hart's golfing ability. Having had to carry both my clubs and him around the course, I am painfully aware that your description was charitable to the point of being dishonest. Good job his tea making was at the other end of the scale otherwise the trophy cabinet wouldn't be nearly so full. Incidentally, just where is our trophy cabinet going to be?
