View Full Version : Bretton Woods
Just read this in the ET
http://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/news/Lions-get-OK-to-build.4343193.jp
Anyone know if football will still be played there?
Either way, it is good for Peterborough and good for Sport. All pitches aren't normally used at Bretton Woods, so if they leave three, that should be sufficient? They should include, as part of the deal, redevelopment of the pavilion changing rooms, which are medieval standard!

Fantastic for the Area just wonder how long the facilities will stay a good standard in Bretton. Only need to take a look at the current changing room to see what will no doubt happen.
That was pretty much what i thought Raph, i would take it as read that given the amount of investment that is going into this project, there will be superb facilities built to replace the exsisting ( or should i say non- existant ones? ).
As long as there is scope for football to be able to use these facilities, then it seems to be a win - win situation.
I suppose our main concerns are going to be:
How many pitches, if any at all will be available to the footballing community, and how much more will it cost to use these?
the three best pitches at bretton woods are not even on the main field. the 2 the other side of the trees/footpath are pretty good and there is also another pitch beyond those in a "bowl" which is probably one of the best pitches in pboro and is a joy to play on but probably gets used about once a decade!
That 'bowl' one used to be where Posh trained and you could go down and watch when I were a lad, jumpers for goalposts and all that!
I don;t understand how this is so good for the area as losing a big part of greenland to some clod hoppers is not my idea of good!
I take it they will need planning permission before this goes ahead?? As a bretton resident I would be interested to see any plans and I am sure their will be a consultation period before this can get the go ahead!! Also, does this mean that Footy and Cricket will not be played their anymore
Now i agree that they need to go somewhere but I do not see the reasoning behind a 600 seater stadium and all that comes with it being put up at Bretton Park! Surely there are other sites on the outskirts of the city that would be better suited?
This looks like the council are taking the easy option of not spending money re-developing the Bretton grounds as they know they should as it cost to much and are wanting others to do it!!
Any P'boro lions thoughts/comments would be most appreciated!! Also some plans as first I heard of this??
also why would they want to build it there? it'd last 5 mins! and end up being a bottomless pit for their funds. the poor facilities that people mention mean people dont wanna wreck it and thats probably why its stood the test of time.
on another point even as recent as 7-8 years ago you couldn't move there for people on sunday mornings but now there's hardly anyone. if the council used their heads and brought in some initiative and really sold the place to play at it'd be a great money earner that could be pumped back into facilities all over peterborough. actually i just realised i was talking about peterborough city council!
I think it is good that investment is coming in . . . as long as this investment is mirrored with some development of the exisiting football facilities.
I can't see Bretton residents being too happy about 600 people coming in and out of the area every weekend though!
Oh, and Foggy, the majority of the land is greybelt if you look at the 'paper, not green.
Could be a dream for a dreamer that runs P'boro lions but if not I have some questions -
Where they gonna park?
What about the floodlights being on 3/4 time a week with training and matches? Residents till not be happy
What about the extra traffic?
What they doing about the walkways and access?
They are just a few!! Now I am all for improving the cities sports facilities (inc 4 egg chasers) but not at the deteriment to the environment and local commumity!
Is there a planned meeting and council debate on this? I know early days but reading the plans they are on about starting work in 4/6 weeks? Surley that is not permitted!!
In an ideal world the council wouldn't need private investment for projects such as this, but are we living in utopia?
I would guess that the issue of parking will be adressed and hopefully some extra space will be incorporated when the site of the old school is redeveloped into houses and a supermarket. ( I hope you were already aware of that JNE, i dont want your blood pressure to go off the scale! )
As for there being a meeting about it? Give the council a ring!
After reading the article again, this paragraph is slightly worrying
"They are proposing to lay out two rugby pitches and a cricket pitch, and to refurbish four of the existing eight school tennis courts. "
No mention of football there!
Might just be an oversight but if you have serious concerns then like i said before, get in contact with :

Have spoken to a contact at the ET who has said that it is just an idea at present and some of the things said are far, far away!!
Will have to wait and see!!
JNE, contact her anyway and ask her to keep you informed, at least then if something is proposed that you have an issue with, you can object before it is too late.
This topic reminds me of my schooldays at Bretton Woods, it was always a football school but for a couple of years in the early 80s the H posts went up. This led to all the fat lads in our year forming a rugger team and challenging us to a game, even though we didn't have a clue about the rules we were beating them so bad they gave up at half time. Mr Brown, who had formed the rugby team sent off Michael Charlton after ten minutes because he refused to pick the ball up and dribbled it from one end of the pitch to the other to score a try!
Backs up my theory that rugger players are men who couldn't get in the footie team at school.

I think its a great idea! Having lived in bretton all my life it will be a fantastic resource for the community and especially as that land is not gonna be used for housing etc
Foggs, now i know why you didnt take the PSL job, you want to be a politician!
At school I played football and rugby. In Peterborough there is a stigma attached to Rugby, but at my schools WTFAMU - the ones who didn't play rugby were too frightened to do so and most of us played in the football team too!

At John Fisher we had rugby as a PE lesson but we never had a school team. Saying that our playing field never had the capacity to have a rugby pitch, we were that good at football you see!
John fishers footbal team sucked! Bretton woods all the way. We ruled. I'm sure Foggy will agree as iirc his year were unbeaten

Bretton Woods!?! When I was at School - which I didn't think was that long ago - Stanground were always THE team. As far as I knew it had nothing to do with the county teams being run from that school :whs:
Foggy - this is not even news it has been in the ET now for the last 2 weeks - anything that improves the lighting in Bretton is good thing isn't it? 600 cars a week - that just what's normally nicked anyway :joke:

Dont talk to me about Stanground, i've got a drawer full of runners up medals because of them. http://www.peterboroughsportstalk.co.uk/forum/images/icons/icon8.gif
Then again they did have a superb team at the time, they got through to the final of the national cup i seem to remember?
It would have been around 1981/2, anyone on here who can confirm?
You are right Ross!! Undefeated in 5 years at p,boro schools level although we lost in the F.A national comp in the early rounds!
Stanground was only good for beating - bit like an egg! Jack Hunt were the team to rival us as had Edgey, Pauly, Chapman to name a few!!
Bretton til I die - Oh and we were the hardest school also!!

hahaha we were rubbish at football in my day (too busy with cider and smoking) but talking of hardest schools, not many messed with Orton Longueville back in my day, we ran Bushfields, Stanground and none from accross the river were ever heard of.... those were the days!!!
I remember one lovely Friday afternoon 2 or 3 hundred of us descended on Bushfields only to be met with riot police and a local TV crew, all the younger lads were tooled up (idiots) and it turned into carnage, kids fleeing everywhere from police and getting caught on camera etc hahahaha.. Bushfields lads hid in their classrooms!
We're talking a good 21 - 22 years ago here by the way.... sh*t I feel old saying that!

I think John Fisher was the smallest sec school in Pboro and the softest!
Us good catholic boys and girls never used to play in the field or tennis courts at break for the fear of some Eastholm mob throwing bricks at us or the strong contingent of gypsies or travellers waiting for us after school! Those were the days
Bretton Woods v Jack Hunt was the big bundle in the early 80s, funny thing about it was that you ended up scrapping your mates you played footie with the following weekend.
I remember JH taking over the Cresset one day, i became the hero of the school as a 1st year i was the only one with the guts to walk through. What i forgot to tell everyone on my triumphant return to BW was that my oldest brother was part of the 5th year nutty crew at JH and nobody would have dared touched me anyway:whs:
Got my first tit grope off the back of that, so Tracey i apologise if you are reading this, i wasn't as brave as you thought i was :D
well this thread has gone drastically off topic :D

i just wanna know will it still be safe to leave ya stuff in the changing rooms?
I lived in Ravensthorpe, so learned to take a kicking both ways. You'd have to pick a side during the Westwood versus Bretton fights. There were always plenty of bricks and snooker cues in the bushes!
Apart from that, I went to a Grammar School and then King's . . . believe it or not . . . so I never got messed with really (apart from every morning and afternoon walking through Ravensthorpe, Bretton, Westwood and Walton to catch my bus in a black blazer . . . and people wonder why I have a tendency towards aggression in adulthood? !!)
