I would like to talk about insurance and the lack of it at P'boro Clubs. After breaking my leg last year I was very lucky that Ortonians were an excellent Club and excellently run who had insurance and I benefitted from this whilst I was off work.

I am sad/worried to hear that this is not the case at all clubs and this is highlighted this weekend with the unlucky Rizzo (ant) breaking his leg on Sat for Jubilee. He had a bad break and was operated on the following day.

The lad will be off work for the next 2/3 months and may not get paid depending on the circumstances he is in. Surely insurance should be a compulsory for all Peterborough Football League clubs as although competitive we are everyone has to go to work on a Monday Morning.

Jubilee will no doubt do something to try and help Rizzo but we must get this as compulsory for the future to ensure players have some financial protection if they suffer a serious injury, even though it might not amount to much.

Mr Chambers, What is the committee stance on this and could this be something that be voted in at the next AGM?? :soo:

What do people think?? I know another financial burden for clubs but feel this is vital at all PFL clubs!!

I was under the impression that it already was compulsory!? I know it's something we have had at Fletton for as long as i can remember and we increase it every chance we get. dental care also included, ask Ruddy. but if not compulsory then sholud be..

You are right Foggy Ortionians did have insurance and this was partly funded by the £10.00 signing on fee which if memory serves me right you never paid I'm sure Mr judge will know for sure. Hanks I think it is compulsory with the Hunts FA not the league that's why Hotpoint/Fletton have always had it.

Shame on you Wils mentioning money and Foggy in the same sentence. Foggy my records show you actually made a profit on your efforts for the Reserves :soo:

Mr Judge nice to hear from you, where you been hiding? Profit, your having a  Cost me a fortune!!

Just answer the question please - Should insurance be compulsory for the PFL??

Yes Foggy it should be compulsory, but who pays? it is very expensive to get the type of cover to cover someone who is injured and gets nothing at all from work. We had the minimum cover at Ortoinians and trying to get players to contribute was like trying to get blood from a stone. In Junior Ice hockey (I know Tommy) the league have a blanket cover for all the teams and officials however each player has to pay £55.00 to register.

surely we should pay a signing on fee to the league each season and they sort the insurance out. this way if players move teams then there cant be any arguments over someone not paying. and the best way to implement it is to refuse a players registration until the fee has been paid.

i'm sure a league the size of ours or the county fa's each team are affiliated to could get an excellent deal with an insurance company :soo:

JB that sounds a pretty good idea to me and Tommy the Insurance man is in place on the league committee to sort it all out.
It could be part of the three year plan he has for local football :soo:

Making it part of the signing on fee may work.

It will probably depend on if an insurance company will cover a league. The insurance premium we have only covers one team of 20 players. This comes through every year from Cambs FA. This is the first year we have been able to afford it.

The league do offer public liability insurance to all Northamptonshire FA affilated clubs, which they are strongly urged to take. Player insurance is however not mandatory. In my opinion all clubs should offer player insurance in some form. When I was Secretary of Three Horseshoes we used arrange a club blanket insurance, which would probably cost £300 or so. (sometime ago though). However the benefits to an injured player was not huge for example £20-£30 per week.

Our club rules were subsequently amended to advise the players that they should seek their own individual accident insurances. This in turn would allow a tailormade premium to reflect the individuals potential loss of earnings. This is my personal opinion on this. However if clubs need to get the league view on it then they should write formally to the league.

Best wishes to Antony.

The cover we have pays out £100/wk after the first 14 days. We have advised the players that they should consider thier own insurance as a top up to cover their own salaries. This will bring down an individuals premiums. Of course we do ask that players make an extra effort to attend fund raising events to fund the insurance. We have enough problems getting in subs without imposing a signing on fee, of course we could state that no fee, no cover. It costs over £500 a year.

With you on this one Gary - we don't have a signing on fee, but I certainly believe we, as a club, have an obligation to our players and as a result the club provides cover for the lads insurance wise, so they get £100 pw after the 14 day qualifying period - Strongly advise them to top this up with their own personal insurance.

Problem for me is that some of the lads who play in the reserves dont earn anywhere near £100 pw on their paper rounds so getting them to take out additional insurance is a bit difficult

this is why i suggested the PDFL or county fa's that clubs are affiliated to take the responsibility for their members. although the initial premium would be higher as there would be many more players to contribute the individual cost would be cheaper as there would be many more people to contribute. for £10 per player per season i'm sure the PDFL or county fa's could get a deal that gets you much more than £100 per week. although every little helps i'm sure there are many players who get taxed more than £100 per week

if there was a scheme by the league to cover the entire it should be made compulsory. its also in the best interests of the league and its members as its only a matter of time before people start taking legal action over an injury caused by a dodgy pitch or a rash tackle in a game the referee has failed to control properly which unlimately would be the responsibility of the league concerned.

JB, You can't make insurance compulsory, except car insurance that is. Public liability is strongly urged, but the main responsibilty must rest with the individual player. However I applaude any club that has arrange some form of insurance scheme.

Mark, Employers Liability cover is also compulsory under the 1969 Act

If you are saying that refs should be covered under employee liabilities Tommy a whole can of worms would have to be opened then, National Insurance contributions, PAYE etc etc, would lead to spiralling costs for clubs and an even more shortage of refs. Although if some refs I know were taxed on their brain usage they'd be a few who would get a f****** good rebate at the end of the season
