View Full Version : Mick Belson
Hi guys.
Just to let you all know, that our good friend and local legend Mick Belson left us this morning, after his brave battle with cancer.
We'll miss you Mick, I for one grew so much as an individual, when you were a part of my life as my gaffer with Sean Hamill at EMAP FC and as my Assistant Manager at SSPIO. You taught me respect on the field and how to be a gentleman off it too and for that I will never forget you.
I am representing everyone when I say without a doubt, that the local game has lost a local hero and a legend.
Sleep well mate

my best memory of mick is as an honest caring lad who just loved the game. as managers on a sunday we crossed paths many times with mick mainly coming out on top, and mick is one of those guys that just smiled at you when you were ****ed off. (the only time mick got hacked off was when the nags head pub shut down) when he quit management he became a lino, i remember having a go at him once about a late flag, mick turned round looked at me and said, sorry al i know i got it wrong and just grinned. you just have to respect mick as being the most genuine and honest guy in the local game over the last 25 plus years. you will be sadly missed mick our loss is heavens gain.we all have fond memories and our personal moments with mick, a true local legand, and im just pleased that i had mine

to al of Micks family, sincere condolences
to all of the local game; what a loss
sleep well my son
Well put Al . . . one of the few truly honest men and if someone were to question his credibility, you'd soon know about it!
Could I make a suggestion for this week, of teams wearing a black armband (even if it's tape) to show our appreciation of Mick's life and how much he'll be missed?

I can only echo what others have said really, A legend amongst our community.
Hearing Mick speaking with our/his lads, about how the game should be played and seeing how he enjoyed it all, was something I'll not forget.
Mick had time for everyone, opponents, refs, subs, supporters etc, everyone knew him and would always come over to say hello and chat for a while... He'll be missed by us all.
Thoughts and Condolences are with your family at this time - RIP Mick.
RIP Mick.It was an honour to have known you.
RIP Mick, but there is no time to take it easy. There are a lot of players up there that need a good manager, and I'll bet the Nags is up there somewhere, if it is Mick will already be enjoying a pint.
Sincere condolences to Micks family.
Don't forget while his memory lives on he is immortal
Mick
Although I only knew you a short time, it was an honour and a pleasure to have you as part of the SS PIO family. You were always on hand to help players, management and others with the benefit of your years of experience in the local football scene. The world is a poorer place now that you are no longer with us.
Rest in peace my friend,

Some nice pictures there Raph with him in his element. Mick was a big influence to more people than he may ever have known, his family can be very proud of him. God bless you Mick and God Bless his family.
From all at the Hampton Sports Football Club.
Its hard to think that one of lifes great characters has been taken from us....it was a pleasure and an honor to have meet and learnt so much from a true gentleman. Even tho you will not be with us in person, every time we step out to a match our thoughts will be about you.
Be at peace with the angels my friend.
Sleep well xx
Just had a little laugh to myself and then a tear. Have a look at this link: http://www.pst-uk.co.uk/forum/search.php?searchid=31083 and see some of Mick's old posts. His wisdom and sense of humour, coupled with authority, makes good reading.
RIP Mick. You were one of the good guys. It was a pleasure knowing you over the years. My sincere condolences go out to all his family and friends at this sad time. God Bless

Raph - Write to the league and see if we can get a minutes silence before all the matches in the Peterborough league.
I ask Fred Johnson (Chairman) of the PSMFL as to whether it was possible we could do anything on Sunday Morning as a mark of respect for the life of a well loved man in local football.
He has given the backing of the PSMFL for any team who wishes to wear black arm bands and/or have a few moments silence/applause, may do so. But it is the case that it cannot be mandatory.
I, myself do hope every club gets involved in some way, the man will be sorely missed not only by his family but his many friends

Mick loved the post-match hospitality that The Windmill used to lay-on for us. Sometimes I think that was the only reason he came down on a Sunday morning! haha
Another team photo, he loved his red jacket!

Post match at the Windmill was top notch and they used to lay on a great spread for us, the banter was always superb with Mick usually in the thick of it - good times!
The shirt to the left of him, was that the commemorative EMAP shirt you gave to him Sean?

We used to win back then as well!
I have had trouble getting onto the site for the last few days, but just wanted to pass on my condolences to the Belson family. I spent two seasons with Mick going through that mornings game over a pint and putting the rather small world of Sunday football to rights. Very enjoyable conversations, and enlightening to say the least!
Put my name down for any team/match arrangements.
Cheers
Ian

Minute silence for Mick B.
We beat Leverington 'A' 7-1 with SSPIO Reserves today. When I ran the reserves with Mick B, our first match was against Leverington 'A' in 2007 and we won 6-1. We had fish 'n' chips and a pint in the clubhouse after and felt on top of the world with our newly formed side.
RIP Mick, I even scored a rare left-footer for you today :)

i wanted to share this light hearted moment at micks funeral friday, mick got carried into the church by family members, on top of mick was a football made of flowers, as the lads took mick through the 1st door the ball hit the top of the door frame, much like hitting the crossbar, as they approached the 2nd door, which was lower, i could heard mick mentally saying' for F's sake lads dont drop the ball!!!, just as it looked like the ball would hit the bar and bounce away the boys must have heard him as they all dipped at the same time and the ball sneaked in just under the bar! GOAL!!! what a result. what a fantasic way for me to remember the late great mick belson, where even in death he had me thinking about the beautiful game. great turn out and massively supported.
Great to hear that story Al and that the funeral was well-supported.
It was a real memorable day, so much support there for him and his family it was brilliant.
I along with many others couldnt get in the church there were that many people there but fortunately the sun was shinning down for the day.
The wake or celebrations however you want to look at it were brilliant there were again loads there and the whole day was just perfect.
Some good stories from Jed and another fella who i dont know had us all laughing and some classic pictures of Mick up on the projector were just priceless.
R.I.P mr Belson.

A fitting send off for Mick, the turnout at the church just shows what a top bloke he really was.
Michaels speach in the church was something else too and it said so much about Mick and his family.
Back at Ebeneezers for a fitting final send off and again so many of us there all paying tribute, Harbs you're right, Ged has us in stiches as did a few others with classic tales of Micks past, some of the photo's up on the projector were brilliant too, Mick with a 70's tash etc..
A top bloke - RIP.
Thank you to all the footballers and friends who turned up and made dads send off such a special day. Also due to your kindness the fund raising towards brain tumour research has begun with 1700 quid raised on the day. Me Mum and all the family were touched by how many people turned up but also pleased that everyone enjoyed celebrating dads wonderful but all so short life... he would have been over the moon .
he has gone but will never be forgotten
