WHITTLESEY UNITED RESERVES 2
AFC FLETTON RESERVES 1
The Manor
Att: 107
Whittlesey continued their surge up the Combination League table with an impressive 2-1 victory over AFC Fletton on Saturday afternoon.
Returning to the Manor albeit over the far side as our first team were also at home, we were well aware of the importance of this fixture as we looked to close the gap on the teams currently above us.
The visitors who had scored 22 goals in their previous four games started the game well, with their two front players and both wingers looking extremely lively. Meanwhile Whittlesey wing back Lee Baker who arrived just moments before kick off started to get into the rhythm of the game with several flowing runs down the flanks for the home side.
With 20 minutes on the clock a flowing Whittlesey move that involved front man Burch and Baker sent Baker flying down the wing, he cut back a great ball to the edge of the 18 yard box where fellow wing back Bob Dart on the opposite side of the pitch connected sweetly with the ball and executed a volley that flew into the corner of the visitors net much to the delight of the home bench. The visitors seemed rattled at there failure to control a rampant young Whittlesey who had now kicked into gear. The three centre halves for Whittlesey started to dominate the lively front pairing of Fletton who have been banging in goals for fun, despite this the visiting side came close on a couple of occasions as an eventful first half drew to close. First Fletcher saved well from the Fletton forward and then the ball flew over the cross bar.
The second half saw Whittlesey and Fletton battling for possession and both sides really went for it. Danny Baxter in the middle of the Whittlesey park was in fine form with distribution of the ball that David Beckham would have been proud of. Meanwhile front man Micky Burch was also proving to be a thorn for the Fletton backline with some fantastic hold up play that was aiding the team’s performance. Half way through the second half Burch hit a volley from outside the box that nestled into the bottom right hand corner of the Fletton goal to make it 2-0 to Whittlesey.
Fletton then desperately searched for a way back into the game and ultimately looked to have found a niche when Eason fired in from close range much to the bewilderment of the Whittlesey back line who thought that the Fletton Centre Forward was offside. Fletton then pushed for an equaliser with all hands to the pump, but the Fen boys defended resolutely and visitors cause wasn't helped when they were reduced to ten men, when their star striker was sent off for dissent.
So another three points in the bag for the young lads from Whittlesey against a very good side. The visitors haven't tasted defeat much this season and it showed at the final whistle when they surrounded the referee to dispute some of his afternoon's decisions. In my mind we were worthy winners and the referee had a good game and tried to let it flow as much as he could. We didn't care we had done our job and what we had set out to get earlier that day - three points.
Like I’ve said before we’ll just take one game at a time, looking for 3 points in each of them. As long as we do that and focus on ourselves only we have a real chance of finishing amongst the top 2 or 3 teams in the league.
