England manager Fabio Capello has stripped defender John Terry of his England squad captaincy. The vice-captain Rio Ferdinand will receive the armband, with Liverpool's Steven Gerrard to become vice-captain.
As well as the emotional cost, it is rumoured that the decision will also prove financially painful.
“He could lose out by as much as 2 million to 4 million pounds," Nigel Currie, director of sports marketing agency BrandRapport, said before the decision was announced. "He has a key role as an ambassador, particularly with regard to his club and country’s sponsors."
His only endorsement contract, valued at 4 million pounds, is with Nike owned Umbro, whose apparel he wears. An Umbro spokeswoman declined to comment on the agreement. He also benefits from agreements between Chelsea and consumer goods manufacturer Samsung Electronics Co. and England’s contract with lender Nationwide Building Society.
"I fully respect Fabio Capello’s decision," Terry said in statement. "I will continue to give everything for England".
