Ferdinand To Miss World Cup

Rio Ferdinand has capped a disappointing season with another injury, which will rule him out of the tournament in South Africa.

The knee injury resulted from a clumsy tackle by Emile Heskey in training and stand-by defender Michael Dawson is due to fly out to join-up with the squad.

Vice-captain Steven Gerrard will take over as captain of the squad and will lead the team out in the first fixture against the USA.
