All the hard work is finally starting to pay off. For the first time this year, we had a full squad healthy and available for selection and it showed as we travelled to last years Division 1 playoff semi finalists, Oxford Saints on Sunday and showed exactly what we are capable of.

However, I left Oxford with mixed emotions. For all the good we did out there, there’s still plenty of holes in our game that need to be addressed before we set off to Colchester in 5 weeks time. Those largely stem from a lack of practice time, but if we can remedy that over the next month then I’m absolutely certain we’ll be challenging for a playoff place come the end of this season.

Feels good to get back to the things we’re best at this week too – getting out into the community and doing our bit for Sport Relief was a great experience, and we certainly proved popular with local TV and Radio – not to mention the filming gig coming up this Monday for a popular Channel 4 TV show, add that to a guest appearance at the Miss Peterborough Beauty Pageant on Sunday, and that’s what being a Saxon is all about.

Intense focus on the field is a must, but we always look for guys who are happy to represent the club in the community too – it’s a massive reason why we’ve attracted the investment we have in recent years, and why we’re looked upon so favorably by our peers. Playing for the Saxons is much more than just a hobby, and in a way, I’m glad if that scares people away from trying out for us – it’s a dangerous sport, and if you aren’t committed to excelling, it can be risky stepping foot on the field.

Realistically, I don’t see a lot of player movement between now and the start of the season – we’ve retained the backbone of last years team and some of our ‘rookie’ players are really stepping up to the plate. We’ve got the talent and ability to beat any team in the Division this year, but it’s still up to us as an organization to deliver – that go’s for me as Chairman too but a 5 touchdown performance in Oxford certainly went a long way towards giving the guys the same confidence I have, and I can’t wait to see how we fare on opening day.

If anyone wants more information about the team, please drop us a line on info@thesaxons.co.uk - our website www.thesaxons.co.uk is currently being rebuilt and running behind schedule, but anything you need or want to know, just drop me a line – especially if your interested in volunteering on game days!
