American Football took the UK by storm this weekend as the New Orleans Saints and the San Diego Chargers faced off at Wembley Stadium in front of an 83,000 strong crowd. Now, fans of the sport have an opportunity to get involved with their local side as the Peterborough Saxons open their doors for this years ‘Gathering’ the club’s annual recruitment campaign.

The Saxons, who run Youth and Senior teams, catering for ages 16 upwards are looking to bolster both squads ahead of the new season but are also keen to attract younger athletes with a view to launching Cadet (8-13) and Junior (14-16) teams to compete in 2009.

Mark Kerr, General Manager told us it’s not just players the club is looking for “The British American Football Association has launched an initiative called ‘Get Into American Football’ advertising the numerous facets of the sport which people can get involved with”

“As well as players, we’re looking for aspiring coaches, volunteer staff, supporters, you can even earn a little extra cash this summer by training to become a referee – the opportunities are endless”

Budding players will be put through an NFL style mini camp, where their performance will be measured across a series of strength, speed and agility drills with an invite to pre-season training camp at stake.

Kerr added “You don’t have to have played the sport before, but you do need a strong work ethic, and be prepared to learn, our coaching staff will take care of the rest”

‘The Gathering’ takes place at Stanground College on Sunday 9th and 16th of November and newcomers are encouraged to arrive by 10:00am. For more information visit www.thesaxons.co.uk or email info@thesaxons.co.uk
