What makes a good manager and who were the best you played under?
Mine would be in no particular order
Dave Bennett- Gedney hill
Mick Belson- Nags Head
Spec- fletton
I knew Dave and Mick better than spec but I respected all three and knew if I had a problem they would help, their man management was quality even Specs. Lol
Candygram for Mungo!
Wow, I can name every manager i have played under from the age of 7
Kid
Andy Avery - Newborough -- I was very young but many of the lads that played for that team went on to be very decent players
Gary Buckman (Kev Brodie assisted) - Eastgate Rangers (whipping boys of the league -- I cant believe he stuck it out for so long but now im older I realise its because he did it for every one else and not himself, we used to lose double figures every week, worst game was 35-0 away to Sawtry in my first game for them!!
Teen
Al Lenihan - Stamford U18's -- I dont need to say anything you don't already know about this guy, our team was f-ing quality!
Adult
Trevor Wass - Perkins reserves -- Only joined to help him out at the demand of Darren Wilburn, my strongest memory of playing my second game. Quote: Trevor 'I honestly thought you were **** Lee, but your not too bad after that performance' I assumed that was a compliment?
Kenny Venters/Alan Clarke - Perkins Reserves -- I wasnt going to add the ressies as I wasn't even there a whole season also my memory is a little hazy from this stage in my life (teenage dramas) However Kenny my appologies and I was very sad to see you step away from football this year and my instant hope that it would only by a short term break speaks volumes for you. However my best memories of you are as a footballer, you used to scare the **** out of me at 7 a side and i hated playing your team, especially getting in the way of your shots!
Gino Agius & (Alex Brown when they were a duo) - Perkins & Eye Sports (al's now on board) -- Never won anything in the whole time I was there (other than a few splinters) but stayed loyal to a guy that gave me a chance and helped me out, out side of the game too.
also:winners and cup winners league one with two promotions in 3 seasons.
Sundays
Richard line / Alan Wilburn - Star inn FC -- Absolute bunch of misfits, but a tight group of lads that grew up together and the managers helped us stay that way, loved every moment of it, including the 7 games in 5 years we won!!! (these sort of guys take over to keep the fun going, you have to respect that!
Shakey (Scott Stainsby) - Jube/Racing -- Won more in three years under this man than i have in 20 years of playing football! The team definately helped but the manager has to get the team together!
Lee Colbert/John Watson - Coates -- This will be the end to my Sunday football, they should definately stick to playing but its a great crack playing for these guys!

Don't remember you at Newborough Harbs. I played in goal for Andy
Really! Yeah i was there right up until the day he left.
I think i was playing right back at the time, central mid had Bret Bellamy and Lee Clarke and Paul Webb so i didnt stand a chance!
Mind you I suspect you looked a lot different back then mate![]()
Thanks harbs!!!
Harbs ?? - Didnt you win runners up league 2, runners up league one then winners and cup winners league one ????
Sorry Kenny, amendment made.
Though i do seem to have an ability to block parts of my life out so thats no refelction on you as a manager![]()
Very Good Question!
Will not go bad to the youth days as played for varying teams ranging from Sheff Utd boys to school team so will stick to UCL and P'boro prem
Dom Genovese - Great trainer, dedication, will to win and general person. When at blackstones and I was fitter than ever due to his training. Team did well although could have been better.
Vince adams - Took over from Dom and whilst not in his league for trainign he had a way with people and was blessed with a side that included a young and extremely talented Jamie Graham.
Jan and Raggy - Enjoyed my time at March Town although travelling was unbelieveable. Only blokes I know that could drive home after drinking a bar dry.
Nigel Robinson & Andy Murphy - Silver Jubilee legends and great blokes, had an amazing time and we should have been promoted but for league hyprocisy and rules that were pathetic. Great drinking days also!
Tommy Cooper - Ortonians was great despite breaking my leg, Tommy had a way with players and the team and despite being the most hated man/team in P'boro football he always used this to his advantage which is why they won so many trophies
Alex/Gino - Am very grateful to both for their time and efforts in helping me get back to playing after breaking my leg. Whilst I never always see eye to eye with Alex (mainly due to sunday rivalry) his willingness and energy in encouraging me to play again will leave me always having total respect for him
Big Seamus - PNS reserves is some of the most fun I have had in football, winning trophies, helping the kids along and generally sticking 2 fingers up to certain people was great not to mention the great drinking culture and tema spirit Shay had fostered. Not the most tactical you will come across but definitley the most passionate and knows how to build a winning side and get players!
John Hastings (sun) - Three Horsehoes were the most talent laden team I have played in with players like Pledge, Hilly, Hamish, Robbie Chapman, spec and David Riley to name but a few. However, we never won anything but I learnt alot from them all and I still rate Hilly and Pledge as 2 of the best players I have ever played with.
Shakie (sun) - BNE was all my mates turning up and playing footy and shakie made it happen! Great bloke and knew how to make things work for a young team who grew up together by putting players in the right place and making the correct decisions, won numerous trophies and would have won more but for the demise of the league and him pulling out because of this. I miss those sunday afternoon drinks and watching Jamie Graham terrorise defences, the best player I have ever seen!
Thinks that is it but apologises if I have missed someone one off.
I have played for a few managers and they've all brought something different to the table. The main ones that have made a positive contribution to my game are:
Alan Wilburn (Star Inn) - my first manager back in football after many years of not playing and what a fantastic bloke. Also a great man manager and gave me the confidence to want to play on Saturdays. He also used to come and watch us play for Perkins Res, even after his son and our former captain Darren passed away.
Kenny Venters (Perkins Res) - my first Saturday manager and created a double winning reserve team that dominated our division.
Jimmy Brattan (Kings Cliffe) - a great man-motivator and engenders a great "them against us" spirit within all of his teams. Taught me how to defend, when I'd always been a winger.
Sean Hamill/Mick Belson (EMAP/FC Bauer) - a great team and bounced off each other well. Kept a great group of lads together, who I still count amongst my best friends to date. Most of the lads now play for me on a Sunday AM.
Rick Marheineke (Huntingdon Town) - a good coach and tactically astute. Stepped aside to let Macca take over the ressies, who was another supportive manager that tried to take the positives from any bad performance. Plus Macca is doing a good job of getting us level with Rangers again in the Auld Firm Cup ... who are the people? !!!
Coaching-wise, Danny Clifton is the most inspiring coach that I have had the pleasure of training with. He brings sessions to life and you actually learn things that you can apply to your game. Got a lot of time for Melvin Keen too; top bloke and used to come and watch all of our games with Alan.
