Not sure if this has been mentioned but I am assuming that most people would have seen the absolute howler dropped in the Wigan v Blackburn game. Certainly makes you realise that it doesn't matter what level you are at, any ref can drop a game changing clanger.
Anyway, my question is after listening to the pundits on MOTD. At what point is 'the ball' in play from a free kick or corner ? I believe I know the answer but I was curious to know what peoples opinions are.
That's if anyone is interested !!!!
The ball is in play when it is kicked and moves.
It used to have to travel the complete circumference of the ball, which is around 3 feet or something like that
If you look at the referees position, he has his back to the corner, as he was looking for incidents in the penalty area. My guess is he's assumed that yakubu has taken the corner
I believe the match assessor would have crucified the referee in his report
Latest IFB interpretation is that the ball is in play as soon as it is moved, it no longer has to travel the distance of the circumference, or in this instance leave the corner quadrant.
Another curious one......... the Law says a ball must be stationary before a free kick can be taken. This includes penalties, or as the Law calls them "free kick from the penalty mark". However I can't see in the Laws that this applies to a goal kick. I was recently berated by a player for allowing play to continue when the 'keeper kicked a moving ball from within the 6 yard box. Hope I'm correct!
These are personal views only and not necessarily those of the PDFL.

Well there you go. I didnt know the answer. I need a referee refresher course then. How are these minor tweaks to the rules cascaded out to ALL referees ? I seem to remember a booklet but nobody checked to see if you have read it.
Lets face it Ross. A premiere ref assuming that he had toched the ball, oopsy. Even if Yakubu had touched it, he didnt see it and therefore blow ya whistle and say "I cant give what I didnt see". Was this the same ref that gave the goal a couple of years ago that went in the side netting ?
Norman, what do you think to all PDFL prem assistant refs having to go on a refs course ? And how about lets really get contraversial and throw in a fitness test. A linesman that cant keep up with play is pretty useless in my opinion and probably more important than the ref.
You used to get sent a loaf (laws of association football) when you affiliated, but I haven't received one for years. Generally it's down to the referee themselves to check for law amendments.
If you want a copy of the laws of the game, click http://www.refchat.co.uk/attachments...2011-12-pdf.51
I think the referee was Andre Marriner, Stuart Attwell was the referee that gave the goal when the ball went about 6 yards wide.
